Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur whenever the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles are too tight, weak, or imbalanced.

Common Issues That Lead to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Here are some of the common reasons that men deal with pelvic floor dysfunction:

  • Abdominal, back, or pelvic organ surgery (e.g. hernia, prostate, or bowel obstruction)
  • Chronic constipation
  • Obesity and postural differences
  • Weight lifting or physical labor
  • Breath holding, chronic cough, or asthma
  • High stress and anxiety
  • History of abuse or childhood trauma
  • Age-related changes
  • Prostate enlargement

As Functional, Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine (FILM) practitioners, we look at your entire wellness picture to get to and treat the root of your problem.

What to Expect When Working With Garner Pelvic Health

You are in good hands with our practitioners. When you choose to work with us, this is what you can expect from our clinic:

  • We will thoroughly review your health history and a physical examination to determine what factors are contributing to your concerns.
  • This exam may include rehabilitative Ultrasound imaging (RUSI) to visualize the pelvic floor and other related muscles.
  • A digital exam (rectal) may also be warranted to determine the strength and tissue integrity of the pelvic floor muscles. You will always be included in the decision-making process, and we take a trauma-informed approach to all care, so we will accommodate your comfort at every step.
  • We will provide you with applicable tools, techniques, and education on ways to heal and decrease your symptoms, including physical exercises and diet, hydration, sleep hygiene, stress management, and other wellness practices that support optimal function.
  • During every treatment session, we employ active listening and advanced techniques, including dry needling, RUSI, and Medical Therapeutic Yoga (MTY) in one-on-one sessions to help you achieve the best possible results.
  • We will empower you to take control of your health and teach you how to advocate for your own needs within the medical system if further/additional care is needed.
