Mistakes to Avoid in PT/OT Business (Yoga and Ayurveda) – Part 1, Vata
By Dr. KC Coninx PT, DPT, COMT, PYT
There are plenty of blogs, websites, and coaches talking about what you should be doing to maximize your business endeavors…but few are talking mistakes to avoid in your PT/OT business following a Yogic and Ayurvedic Philosophy. We thought the world needed this, because we genuinely believe that many people could benefit from following Yogic and Ayurvedic wisdom for their personal and professional well-being.
There are 3 parts to this topic, where we will cover the 3 main doshas and the challenges surrounding each one of them. In this blog, we’ll talk about Vata. In the next two blogs, we’ll cover Kapha and Pitta.
Vata Dosha is made of the energy of wind and space. Yogapedia defines Vata in this way:
“Vata is a combination of air and ether. It is dry, light, cold, rough, moving and always changing. People with a predominantly vata dosha are mostly energetic, creative and lively. They are light sleepers with sensitive digestion. When vata gets out of balance, they can get anxious, have insomnia, lose weight and suffer from indigestion.”
It is creative and spiritual at its best and anxiety prone and overwhelmed at its worst.
This is an incredibly important concept to grasp when going into business, because we live in a world that is highly saturated with individuals and communities that are overwhelmed by Vata energy in the negative way.
The energy of Vata is incredibly valuable when controlled and understood and terribly problematic when it’s not. This is just as true in our personal lives as it is in business.
Is Vata Energy Contributing to your Mistakes in PT/OT Business

What does it feel like when you’re in excess of Vata?
You probably feel overwhelmed and lost about which direction to take. You might not be sleeping well, because you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about all the things you need to do.
Maybe you often find yourself feeling anxious and worried about your decisions or choices. You might not be taking many actions because you have so many ideas and can’t commit to any single one of them.
You know you are struggling with too much Vata, when you are in your head worrying about all the possible negative outcomes, never feeling grounded or present in the moment where you can make your best decisions, your thoughts are swirling, you are comparing yourself to everyone else around you, and it just seems that no matter what, you are not happy.
Common Vata Caused Mistakes in your PT/OT Business
Trying to do too many things: It’s hard to put the amount of energy and effort needed to make something work when you are trying to do several different things at once.
Having a poorly organized work space and environment.: This can be really distracting from the current task at hand, making it hard to focus.
Lack of delegation and trying to do EVERYTHING on your own.: It’s important to know when to hire and delegate work. Or maybe you hire a Virtual Assistant for some of the simpler tasks? Or maybe even look into A.I. technology?!
Getting caught up in the “shiny object” syndrome where the follow through on one project gets interrupted by another great idea you have, or what someone else is doing.: Again…this is a reiteration of the initial mistake. Do not try to do too many things at once. You’ll end up doing most of them poorly.
How to Avoid and/or Correct the Vata Caused Mistakes in your PT/OT Business

Well, there are so many ways to balance Vata energy. The big thing to remember is that like begets like. This is an essential premise of all Ayurvedic teachings. So if we want to have something different…we need to do something different.
To feel more grounded, get yourself out of your head and back into your body. There are several things you can do.
- Delegate and outsource tasks that take up energy and drain your mental capacity.
- Focus on 1 or 2 big ideas for business before adding anything else.
- Add play, time in nature, and slow movement exercise to your routine (think yoga, tai chi, walking, weight training).
- Add in creative pursuits with no purpose or agenda. Try painting, drawing, journaling, knitting, cooking, baking, etc.
- Simplify your to-do list. Recognize the things that are really important and let the rest get done later or delegate those tasks.
- Timeblock your schedule and stick to it!
