Mistakes to Avoid in PT/OT Business (Yoga and Ayurveda) – Part 2, Pitta
By Dr. KC Coninx PT, DPT, COMT, PYT
There are plenty of blogs, websites, and coaches talking about what you should be doing to maximize your business endeavors…but few are talking about the business mistakes to avoid following a Yogic and Ayurvedic Philosophy. We thought the world needed this, because we genuinely believe that many people could benefit from following Yogic and Ayurvedic wisdom for their personal and professional well-being.
There are 3 parts to this topic, where we will cover the 3 main doshas and the challenges surrounding each one of them. In this blog, we’ll talk about Pitta. You can read the first part (Vata) here, and our 3rd part will be covering Kapha.
Pitta Dosha is made of the energy of fire and water. Yogapedia defines Pitta in this way:
“The main qualities of pitta dosha are hot, sharp, intense, light, bitter and spreading. Pitta dosha is a combination of the fire and water elements. People with pitta dominance have usually fiery bodies and minds. They are medium size, both in height and weight. They have good digestion and very strong appetite and thirst.
Pittas are strong willed, dominant, ambitious, determined and decisive. If pitta falls out of balance, they can become irritable, angry, judgmental, critical and even aggressive. They can suffer from an acidic stomach, oversensitive skin, extreme body heat or heartburn.”
If you are strong in Pitta energy, you are very prone to burnout. It’s easy to overdo it, because this is in your nature. But that doesn’t mean that more is always better.
The energy flow of Pitta is up and out. This means the energy goes towards your head and out into the world. It can be very draining to be constantly moving in this direction and giving so much of your energy to others.
When Pitta is balanced, a person is well positioned for leadership. They are driven and internally motivated. When Pitta is out of balance, a person is easily angered and judgmental.
Is Pitta Energy Contributing to your Mistakes in PT/OT Business?
The signs of excess Pitta are fairly obvious once you know what to look for. Are you hyper critical of yourself or others? Do you feel mentally or emotionally exhausted or overwhelmed? Are you generally really tired? Do you find yourself easily irritated with yourself or people around you?
You may also be experiencing some common physical signs associated with excess Pitta, including: diarrhea, loose stools, skin redness, eczema, hair loss, heart burn or acid reflux.
It’s not uncommon to feel this way or to have these symptoms. You probably have a lot of things you are trying to accomplish and high standards and goals you’ve set for yourself.

Common Pitta Caused Mistakes in your PT/OT Business
Working too many hours: You may have set an exciting and lofty goal, with the NEED to reach the goal for self-acceptance. This leads to you working more than is healthy. It’s okay to work longer hours from time to time, as long as you also find time to play and connect with family and friends.
Refusing to ask for help: You don’t know everything, I promise. Ask for help and guidance. It can save you a lot of time, effort, and $ in the long run.
Working late into the evening: Not setting boundaries for your work day. Everyone is different for what they need, but being able to stop work is paramount for finding balance in your life.
Working through Lunch: Working and eating do not go together. I sincerely urge you to stop doing it.
Setting too big of a goal too soon: By starting a little smaller, you can ease the high pressure stakes.
Having a business to prove something to the world: This pressure un-neccesarily exacerbates the fire and pitta energy. Find a more meaningful reason for creating and expanding your business.
You have probably noticed a theme here. Essentially, the common problem of excess Pitta is caused by working TOO much.

How to Avoid and/or Correct the Pitta Caused Mistakes in your PT/OT Business
We want to learn how to harness the amazing capacity of this inner fire that doesn’t lead to burnout.
In order to continue to grow and progress in our business WITHOUT burning out in the process, consider these tips to balance your Pitta Energy.
- Avoid working while you are eating meals.
- Choose slower exercise and fitness options, like tai chi, slower yoga classes, Nia, or walks outside in nature.
- Schedule in time for fun each week (at a miminum) or maybe even every day.
- Encourage moderation in all things work. Find time for balance between admin time, marketing, and patient care. Don’t forget to add your self-care!
- Making space for meditation, rest, or doing nothing. This is a great way to balance your Pitta energy and make space for more creativity to find its way in.
