This week’s post highlights Leigh Crowder OTR/L, PYT, and her nonprofit work bringing medical therapeutic yoga to children in underserved areas.
During dinner with a friend, PYT graduate, Leigh Crowder, began sharing the impact yoga was having on the children in her occupational therapy practice. Her passion sparked a movement that became Yoga Kidz.
In 2008, Leigh brought yoga to Title I schools-where at least 40% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. What she witnessed was nothing short of incredible. Yoga had an impact that went beyond the typical physical education class. Leigh was meeting needs that were not previously being addressed. Yoga gave the children the ability to cope with difficult situations, allowing them to focus on learning.
“The goal of the Yoga Kidz program is to give the students tools they can use so they can feel in control, of at least themselves, in times of stress and uncertainty.” Read the full PYTS interview and how Leigh’s Yoga Kidz are changing lives, one class at a time.
